6 Hat Care Tips

1. Keep your hat stored in a safe, dry place.

  • Ensure your hat is stored away from fuzzy sweaters, dirt, and grime. Also make sure that nothing is placed on top of your hat. The front structure can get dented if weight is placed on top of the hat.
  • When out and about and not wearing it, store it in its own protective bag to prevent it from picking up lint and other particles.
  • In the winter season keep your hats stored in a dry place. Storing in a damp, cold or moist space could encourage bacteria to grow on your hat and cause sweatband stiffening for the next season.

2. Are you getting sweaty? Or leaving make-up residue on the sweatband?

  • If your sweatband gets overly sweaty and gets a build-up of make-up, bacteria can start to grow and you may notice your sweatband stiffens. To prevent this, if you are sweating or leaving makeup residue, use a damp cloth to clean the sweatband after use. The adventure and sporty fits can be gently hand-washed in cold water with a mild detergent, but it is recommended for the Everyday fit to wipe with a damp cloth.
  • If your everyday hat is getting quite sweaty from regular wear, you may need to replace it if the sweatband is getting a lot of action!
  • If needed your winter beanie can also be hand-washed in cold water, just note that the knit fibers may fray more with washing.
  • After carefully washing your Adventure, Sporty and Beanie fits - ensure you lay them flat to dry in a dry place.

3. If your hat is not on your head, don't leave it in the sun!

  • Like any fibre, with enough exposure to the sun, it can fade. It is recommended to avoid any unnecessary sun exposure (when you're not wearing it) to keep your hat looking good for the long term. Our everyday fit cap is made with cotton (a natural fibre) and is more susceptible to sun fading than our adventure and sporty fits (recycled synthetic fibre). So especially avoid air drying the everyday fit in full sun, or just 'leaving it laying outside' if you aren't wearing it - tuck it away in your beach bag.

4. Avoid touching your hat with sunscreen fingers or dirty hands.

  • The magnetic seam will get a lot of action, opening and closing. It is best that your fingers are clean and avoid sunscreen or make-up oils, or hair products. These chemicals can accelerate sun fading, and the natural oils from your hands could have your hat to look dirty (especially if it is a white or light colour). The magnets can also attract magnetic dirt particles if your using dirty hands to close your magnets, which could create the effect that your magnets are rusting (they are not, but the magnets do attract more magnetic dirt particles if they are exposed to them). Using clean hands will help keep your magnetic seam keep looking fresh for the long term!

5. Be careful around sand and dirt.

  • We personally love taking my hat to the beach, but one day when we were sporting our very white hats, we accidentally dropped it in the sand. At this moment, we realized that some minerals in sand, have magnetic properties, and blackish/brownish dust-like particles stuck to the magnets on our hat. Luckily, it was dry sand, and with a dry toothbrush, we were able to brush away most of the magnetic dust particles. However, if you are swimming in the Ocean or at a Lake with sand in the water, and your hat gets wet - the same magnetic sand particles could sink into the fabric of the hat and if wet potentially stain it or be very hard to remove.
  • Opt to take a not-white color to the beach, or be careful to keep it sand-free :), to avoid those magnetic sand and dirt particles!

6. Be careful with aerosols

  • Bug Spray: Exposure of fabrics to bug spray, particularly under sunlight, can lead to accelerated fading of colors. Take care to shield your fabrics from prolonged contact with bug spray to maintain their vibrant appearance for longer durations.
  • Hairspray and other hair products: Prolonged use of hairspray on fabrics can result in a sticky residue buildup, gradually diminishing their freshness and cleanliness over time. Exercise caution to prevent hairspray from coming into contact with your favorite fabrics to preserve their pristine condition. Hair products mixed with sweat can also produce adverse fabric staining - so exercise caution to help keep your hat clean and stain-free for the long haul!
  • Sunscreen: Beware of the potential fabric-damaging effects of sunscreen! Its oily and greasy nature can leave stubborn residues that pose a risk to your favorite hats. Stay vigilant and take precautions to protect your fabrics from potential damage caused by sunscreen application.
